Screams of laughter echoed from the fair rides. John and Carly staggered from the roller coaster. “Wow babe,” John began. “That was…awesome!” he shouted.

Carly grinned and grabbed him. She then pulled him close to her. As their eyes met, she kissed him. The passion locked between their lips. Hers were soft, tender and delicious. John always loved when she pulled him down to kiss her. She had a sense of independence about her. He loved that. She was strong, vibrant, and exciting. Every night with her was an adventure.

“Come on baby,” she started as she pulled him along toward a dark alley. “I think I saw a place down this way called Fear house. You wanna go?”

John abruptly stopped. “Hold on babe, Fear house?”

Carly grabbed John by the arm as she whipped her dark chocolate brown hair back behind her shoulders. “You aren’t going to let me go in there alone, are you?”

John shivered with the thought. He hated haunted houses, especially funhouses. Rides were one thing, scary places were another. “Can you please tell me why we have to go in?”

“Um…because I love, love, love to be scared!” Carly shouted out ecstatically.

John gazed up at the house at the end of the alley. It was unlike any other house he had ever seen. In fact, it was unlike any other fair attraction he’s seen before. The look left him all the more hesitant. The alley was dark and quiet. The roof was worn and the siding appeared to need paint and fixing. It was odd since the house didn’t seem to fit the rest of the carnival.

Fear resonated deep within himself. But he could see the desire in Carly’s eyes. She wanted to go through the attraction. He seemed to have no other choice other than to surrender, feeling a sense of relief that he would be by her side should anything happen.

  “Okay,” he said. “Let’s go.”

As the two walked up to the front porch, the steps creaked beneath each step as their weight shifted. Reaching the top, John reached up for the handle to knock on the door. It was a large old style iron handle, one of those that you would find on a hundred year old building. The metal was ice cold to the touch. “Ouch,” John uttered as he pulled his fingers back for a moment.

“John?” Carly asked in a concerned tone.

“It’s okay. It’s just cold, ice cold.”

Carly frowned as he took hold of the iron knock and slammed it against the metal pad fixed to the door. Three loud thuds echoed out and seemed to holler within the building before them.

The door quietly opened, revealing a small, awkward man. He was old and wrinkled. His hair was a silvery white, and his skin looked pale as snow. The two studied him for a moment. His face was straight and unwelcoming, until he looked into their eyes. First he looked into Carly’s and then he looked into John’s. A strange crooked smile crossed his face. “How nice you both have come to face your fear. I had hoped you might be along.”

John frowned. “What exactly do you mean?”

The man grinned. “Here my friend, you face a deep inner fear. You will be able to face everything you have never been able to. We make your fear come to life so that you can experience the fear as never before. It will be forever within you, and once released you will be reminded forever of what that fear really was.”

A puzzled look crossed John’s face as the man turned to Carly. “I see your fear in your eyes. Clowns? A childhood fear perhaps?”

Carly’s cheeks turned red as she began to blush. “Yes. How did you know? “

The man chuckled slightly under his breath. “I know everyone’s fear,” he replied as he reach out to take her hand into his shriveled palm. “Why do you fear them?”

  Carly shrugged. “I don’t know.”

His deep black eyes fixed on hers. “Why…do…you…?”

Carly’s eyes ceased blinking. She appeared as though she had been put under a trance. John watched carefully as she suddenly responded. “As a child I was tormented by dreams of a monster clown living under my bed. Every night I would dream he would come to get me.”

The man smiled as the trance suddenly broke over her. He then turned to John. “And you? You fear dentists, don’t you?”

Fearing he too would be put under a trance, John nodded, exposing his deepest fear. “I don’t like the dentist.”

The man smiled. “Are you prepared then to face the fear? Are you both prepared to defeat it or be consumed by the very fear for all eternity?”

Carly moved into John’s arms. “What do you mean?” she asked.

The man began to laugh. “The lights around them went out. Carly screamed as only an echoing laugh remained. Seconds later a light came on. Carly and John found themselves strapped into dentist chairs. “What the hell?” John snapped.

The two began to struggle to get free. The straps were anchoring their legs and arms to the chair. Both were unable to escape. “Help!” Carly began to scream.

A low pitch creaking laugh echoed from one of the dark corners of the room. “I’m sorry Carly. John won’t be able to help you tonight. He has a regular scheduled dentist appointment.”

A clown emerged from the corner. Carly screamed out in fear as the clown moved in toward them with a smile. “I’m glad you and John could come and play today. I have several wonderful new cleaning procedures to try!”

John began screaming as well. The clown held a wide smile as he grabbed a chair on wheels and rolled it in to John. “So, I hear you haven’t been to see one of us dentists in a very long time John. I bet we have lots of cavities! Let’s take a look!” the clown said. He then reached up and turned on a super bright dentist light that suddenly appeared over him. “Let me just get this positioned here,” the clown said.

John could feel his skin begin to sizzle under the high temperature light. The burning left pain sensations shooting up and down his nerves. He could only scream and cry. His screams were as high pitched as they could get. The clown simply smiled over him. “Come on now John. Remember that Carly is watching?”

Carly screamed as the clown reached to the left and pulled one of the dentist tool trays out. It looked like any other, but the tools were much larger than would ever be used. Carly wished she was dreaming. She couldn’t believe her eyes. “Please,” she began to beg. “Don’t hurt my boyfriend?”

The clown slowly rotated around in the chair. He then pulled the laughing gas up to his nostrils. “I think we need some anesthesia before we begin Carly. What do you think?”

Carly shook her head frantically. The clown then laughed hysterically and placed the laughing gas over its mouth. Breathing deeply, he then pulled it away. “Yes, that’s the ticket. Now…What should we start with?”

John began to scream louder as the clown stuck a metal clamp into his mouth and began to twist. “I need an area to work in,” the clown uttered.

John wailed in fear as the clown scanned the tools. “Here we are,” he said as he took one of the hand mirrors. It was a mirror three times the size of a normal one.

  Carly choked. “What is this?”

The clown paused before forcing the mirror into John’s mouth. “We told you when you came, Fear House.”

John gagged as the clown shoved the mirror in. “Oh, look. We have a cavity!”

Carly screamed again as the clown grabbed an extractor. “Now I have to say John, this is gonna hurt, a lot…” the clown chuckled.

John struggled harder as the clown forced the extractor into his mouth. He could feel the col
d steel as it clamped around his tooth. The clown then yanked back and forth. The pain rippled through John’s mouth as he heard a sudden pop, followed by a quick rush of blood.

The clown grinned. The eyes fixed on John’s tooth. “Wow, look at that! See, what a pretty tooth! Too bad it had to come out like all the others!”

One after another the clown yanked John’s teeth out of his mouth, despite the screams in agony. After the tenth tooth the clown grinned. “Do you want me to end all this?”

“Yes,” the gurgled response came out.

The clown laughed. “As you wish. Pathetic,” he uttered. He then pulled a thick cord out from a box that said dental floss. Time to floss!”

Carly continued to wiggle until she could feel the strap give way on her left wrist. She yanked her hand as the clown focused on John. She then snapped her hand over quietly as the clown continued to toy with him. As she unsnapped the other wrist restraint, she began scanning the room for options. She suddenly saw what she needed, a pair of long double bladed scissors.

Unsnapping her ankles, Carly jumped up, ran over to where the scissor was and grabbed it. The clown caught her in the corner of his eye and rose up from the chair. “Come now Carly. I only want to play with you?”

Carly could feel the tears running down her cheeks as she gazed over at John. The tray was full of his teeth. It was then that all of her anger welled up deep down. She channeled it and ran right into the clown with the blade bearing down, plunging it into the clown’s chest.

The clown chuckled as blood bubbled form his mouth. “I didn’t think you had it in you…” he muttered.

Carly pulled the scissors back and jabbed the clown again. The clown dropped to the ground.

Running over to John, she began unstrapping his chair until she suddenly stopped. She gazed at his face and felt her heart stop. He was blue. His face was paled and pasty. John was dead.

Carly began crying and pulled him up to her as the room turned to darkness.

Carly suddenly awoke in a cold sweat, screaming. She suddenly found herself under the sheets. She tried to calm herself, thinking it was merely just a dream. “John! John!” she cried out, looking for comfort.

The bedroom was quiet. She suddenly realized he was lying right next to her. She snuggled into him. “Oh God baby, what a nightmare,” she uttered in a sigh of relief. “I thought that was it. We were going to be done. Hold me? Please?”

John didn’t respond. She ran her fingers along his chest, entangling her fingers in his thick black chest hair. “John?” she uttered. “Baby?”

No response was returned from John. He was as quiet as the dead of night. Carly began to feel a chill run down her back. She could sense now something was wrong. As she slid her hands up to his face she could feel something wet and slimy. She then brought her fingers to her nose. They were saturated with the smell of blood!

Flipping over, Carly snapped on the lights and began to scream at the sight. John was lying in the bed, his face swollen and bloody. He was dead and she suddenly realized everything that she thought was just a dream was reality. There sign was fastened around John’s neck as Carly screamed. The sign read, Thanks for coming to Fear house. Look Who’s laughing now…
